How to use Content Anywhere

Store, access and manage pictures, videos and other files anytime, anywhere. Download the Content Anywhere app for Android or iOS or manage files from your computer. Learn more below.

iOS (Apple) app

The home screen of the Content Anywhere mobile app on your Apple device shows you how many contacts, shares, photos/videos, songs, and documents you've backed up in the last day, 7 days and 30 days.

Access any file in Content Anywhere from the app. Browse by photos, videos, documents or music. Or by folder in the All Files view.

Back up, view, upload, download and search for files

Back up files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu (three lines in upper left corner of app) and select Home.
  2. Tap the Action Menu (three dots in upper right corner) to back up the latest content on your phone.

View files

Tap the Navigation Menu and select Documents. Choose file to view.

Upload files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select Home.
  2. Tap the Action Menu and select Upload.
  3. Select type of file and which document(s) or folder(s) to upload.
  4. Select Upload at bottom of screen.

Download files

  1. Navigate to and select file to download.
  2. Tap the Action Menu and select Download.
  3. To select multiple files, such as photos in a photo album, navigate to album, tap the Action Menu then Select.
  4. Choose files to download.
  5. Tap the Action Menu again and select Download.

Search for files

  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select All Files.
  2. Tap the Search Bar and start typing what you're searching for.

Delete, retrieve, share, unshare and restore files

Delete files
  • Select file to delete. Tap the Action Menu and choose Delete.
Retrieve files

You must use the Web Client to retrieve files.

Share files
  1. Find a file to share and tap the Action Menu then Select.
  2. Choose Files and tap the Action Menu then Share.
  3. Tap to the plus sign to add recipients. Then Add a Message (optional).
  4. To add more files, tap the plus sign next to Add Additional Files, select files to add and tap Done.

Note: To share by a method other than email, tap Other Methods for Sharing at bottom of screen and select method.

Unshare files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu then Share.
  2. Tap the down arrow next to the shared file you want to revoke.
  3. Select Remove Share.
Restore files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select Tools then Content Restore.
  2. Select a device to restore files from and tap Next.
  3. Choose what to restore and network connection to use.
  4. Select Restore.

See what's been shared

  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select Shares.
  2. Then tap either Shared by Others or Shared by Me.

Create a photo album or make favorites

Create a photo album
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select Photos.
  2. Tap the Action Menu, choose Select and pick photo/video(s) to add.
  3. Tap the Action Menu and select Add To Album.
  4. Choose album to add to by tapping Add.
  5. To create a New Album, name the album and tap Save.

Note: Smart Albums are automatically created when photos are taken in close proximity of each other in a specific time period, such as when taking photos at a concert. Once the Smart Album has been created, you can add or remove content and share the album.

Make favorites
  1. Go to content and tap the Action Menu then Select to choose the file(s).
  2. Tap the Action Menu then Favorite.

Create music playlists

  1. Select Music from the main navigation.
  2. Tap the Action Menu then Select and choose songs to add.
  3. Tap the Action Menu then Add to Playlist.
  4. Select a playlist to add song to, then tap the checkmark.
  5. To create new playlist, select the plus sign, give the playlist a name and tap Save.

Change settings

Turn on auto backups
  1. Select Settings then tap What to Backup.
  2. Turn on Auto Backup to ensure content is always safe in Content Anywhere.
Backup via Wi-Fi or Cellular data

Select Settings then How to Backup. Choose either Wi-Fi Only or Wi-Fi + Cellular to limit how your backups are performed.

Choose when to back up

Select Settings then When to Backup. Enable the reminder for Daily or Weekly backups. Choose time to receive reminder.

Android app

Manage files

Back up files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu (three lines in upper left corner of app) and select Settings.
  2. Tap What to Back Up and check the items you wish the app to backup automatically.
View files

Tap the Navigation Menu then Documents. Select a document to view.

Upload files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select the type of file you want to upload.
  2. Tap the Action Menu (three dots in the top right corner) and select Upload.
Download files
  1. Navigate to and select file to download.
  2. Tap the Action Menu and select Download.
  3. To select multiple files, such as photos in a photo album, navigate to album, tap the Action Menu then Select.
  4. Choose files to download.
  5. Tap the Action Menu again and select Download.
Search for files
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu then All Files.
  2. Select a folder to search, then tap the magnifying glass. Start typing what you're searching for.
Delete files

Select file to delete. Tap the Action Menu then Delete.

Retrieve files

You must use the Web Client to retrieve files.

Share files

  1. Find a file to share and tap the Action Menu then Select.
  2. Choose Files and tap the Action Menu then Share.
  3. Tap to the plus sign to add recipients. Then Add a Message (optional).
  4. To add more files, tap the plus sign next to Add Additional Files, select files to add and tap Done.

Create a photo album or make favorites

Create a photo album
  1. Tap the Navigation Menu and select Photos.
  2. Swipe right to the albums selection. Select the plus icon and pick photos or videos to add. Tap the checkmark to add.
  3. To create a new album, name the album and tap OK.

Make favorites
  1. Go to content and tap the Action Menu then Select to choose the file(s).
  2. Tap the Action Menu then Favorite.

Create music playlists

  1. Tap the Navigation Menu then Music. Swipe right to the playlists screen.
  2. Tap the plus sign and select the songs you wish to add, then tap the checkmark when complete.
  3. Once you have existing playlists, you can also tap the Action Menu from any song and select Add To Playlist. Then, select the playlist you want to add the song to.

Change settings

Select Settings then What to Backup and choose one of the following:
  • Contact Sync
  • Photos Sync
  • Videos Backup
  • Music Backup
  • Documents Backup

Backup via Wi-Fi or Cellular data

Select Settings then How to Backup. Choose either Wi-Fi Only or Wi-Fi + Cellular to limit how your backups are performed.

Choose when to back up

Select Settings then When to Backup. Enable the reminder for Daily or Weekly backups. Choose time to receive reminder.

Web client

Note: Messages and call logs can only be backed up and restored from the mobile app. You won't find them in the Web Client.

Manage files

Want to browse by folders or files? Select All Files from the My Activity dropdown menu.

Upload files

  1. Select Upload in the upper right corner.
  2. Drag and drop files onto the indicated area or click to select Browse your Computer and choose files manually.
Download files
  1. Click the checkbox next to files you want to download.
  2. When the More menu appears, select More then Download.

Search for files

Click Search in the upper right corner and type what you're looking for. 

Delete files permanently

  1. Click the checkbox next to the files you want to delete.
  2. When the More menu appears, click More then select Delete and Trash Can.
Retrieve files from trash
  1. Click the Main Navigation Menu, then click Trash.
  2. Select the checkbox next to the file you want to retrieve and click Restore.
Share files
  1. Click the checkbox for the file you want to share.
  2. Select Share then choose how you want to share: email, public link or social media.

Unshare files

  1. Select Shared Files from the main navigation.
  2. Click the checkbox of the file you no longer want to share.
  3. Select Manage and then Revoke.

View files

  1. Select Documents from the Main Navigation Menu.
  2. Click a file to view.

Create a photo album, view a slideshow or make favorites

Create a photo album
  1. Select Photos from the main navigation.
  2. Click the checkbox at the upper right corner of photos and videos you want to include in your album.
  3. Select Add to Album and name the album or select an existing album from the list.
View slideshow
  1. Select Photos from the main navigation.
  2. Click the checkbox at the upper right corner of photos and videos you want to include in your slideshow.
  3. Select Slideshow.

Make favorites

Click the checkbox of items you want in your favorites list, then select Favorite.

Create music playlists

  1. Select Music from the main navigation.
  2. Click the checkbox next to songs you want to add to a playlist.
  3. Select Add to Playlist and choose the existing playlist you want these songs added to or choose Add to a New Music Playlist to create a brand new playlist.

Create contacts

  1. Select Contacts from the main navigation.
  2. Create a Contact and enter contact information.
  3. Select Save at top right corner.

To import contacts

Click Import Contacts from the Contacts menu and select contacts from another service, including Google, Twitter and Yahoo.

To remove duplicate contacts

Remove duplicates by clicking Clean Contacts from Contacts menu. Select contacts to de-duplicate and click Clean.

Desktop client

The Content Anywhere Desktop Client lets you backup, restore, synchronize and share content on your computer within Content Anywhere and across other connected devices. Below are instructions for performing basic tasks.

Access, backup, delete, organize and sync files

Access files

Click the Summary tab of the Content Anywhere Dashboard.

The Dashboard provides key information about your content, including what has been backed up and when. It lets you choose which folders to sync, manage your desktop backup folders, upload music from your iTunes music collection, and configure Desktop Client settings.

To see your Sync files, click Open Content Anywhere Sync folder.

To see your files in your browser, click Content Anywhere website.

Add files to backup

Move files into the Content Anywhere folder using File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

To have Content Anywhere backup a directory automatically, go to the Backup tab of the Content Anywhere Dashboard and select Add Folder. Select the desired directory to backup and press OK / Open.

Note: The content in the Backup folder is the content that you chose to backup. This content will remain even if you delete it from your computer.

Delete files

Delete or move the files out of the Content Anywhere folder. All files deleted from this folder are deleted from the Content Anywhere server.

Note: Deleted files can be restored from the Trash by going to My Activity in the Content Anywhere Web Client.

Manage and organize files

  1. Go to the Summary tab and select Open Content Anywhere website.
  2. Log in using your Content Anywhere credentials and you'll have access to your files and folders.
  3. Change the viewable items and sorting by clicking the My Activity dropdown.

Sync files

Use the Sync folder to choose which folders on each of your devices you would like to access across all of your devices.

Note: Selected folders will sync across all your devices. Unselected folders will not sync across your devices but will remain in your Content Anywhere application on your desktop.

Stop syncing files

Go to the Sync tab in the Content Anywhere Dashboard. Prevent a folder from synchronizing by unchecking the folder. The folder will remain on the Content Anywhere server, but syncing will stop.

Share files from your computer

PC

  1. Click the Summary tab on the Content Anywhere Dashboard.
  2. Select Open Content Anywhere.
  3. Right-click the file you want to share, select Content Anywhere, then select Get Public Link.
  4. Copy this link and share it via email, social media, etc.

Mac

  1. Click the Summary tab on the Content Anywhere Dashboard.
  2. Select Open Content Anywhere folder.
  3. Right-click the file you want to share then select Content Anywhere Share Link.

This link is automatically copied to your clipboard for you to paste and share via email, social media, etc.

Change the location of the Content Anywhere folder

Go to the Settings section of the Dashboard and select Location then Change.

About your photos and music

When you organize your photos into Smart Folders on your computer, they are automatically converted into photo albums when the folder is backed up to Content Anywhere. Now you can go to the Photos view in the Content Anywhere Web Client and mobile apps for a richer photo browsing experience.

Once you create a Smart Folder you can add and remove content within the photo album. Smart Folders can be disabled in the Settings screen of the Content Anywhere Dashboard.

To move your iTunes music to Content Anywhere

  1. Go to the Music tab in the Content Anywhere Dashboard.
  2. Click Find Music.
  3. If you have iTunes installed on your computer and you’re logged into your account, Content Anywhere will present all of the music in your iTunes library.
  4. Select which songs to upload to Content Anywhere.

Note: If you do not have iTunes installed on your computer, the Music tab may not be visible to you.
